Founded in 1979, the Community Center of South Decatur is a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve and maintain The Solarium at Historic Scottish Rite as a sustainable community resource to be used for the assistance, education and enjoyment of the Decatur community.

Through memberships and various fundraising activities, including The Solarium event rentals, The Community Center strives to provide a venue for various community meetings, and to offer discounted event space for the Decatur community. Past events held at The Solarium have included yoga classes, martial arts, stained glass making, art camps for kids, art classes for adults, and public safety programs for seniors.

The Community Center, directed by a volunteer board of community members, has created a management budget with support from the South Decatur Community Development Corporation (SDCDC). A grant of $25,000 paid for interior finishes (hardwood floors, paint, lighting) that would help make the space marketable as a venue for special events; and a loan of $25,000 combined with rental proceeds of other fundraising activities currently supports building maintenance, utilities, insurance, cleaning staff, and part-time administrative staff.
